The article about Faʻasamoa reminded me alot of a kupuna who came to visit us last semester for Olelo Hawaii. As a child, this kupuna would weave papaleʻs to sell at market. Her father would only require them to make as a certain amount. Because it was just a way to get cash so he could buy materials to build their house.
This kupuna, Aunty Annie I believe is in her late 80ʻs. And she still makes the most beautiful lauhala papaleʻs. She said she could make them with her eyes closed, sheʻs that good. And the aunty who brought her said she always has orders...people willing to pay a lot of money. But Aunty rarely sells them. At the end of class that day, the kupuna, Aunty Annie gave away the papale on her head and a papale she had brought.
Idk, this really reminded me of her...still gathering the connection.
